2015 BoS Annual Draft
Big Names, New Places (Mid-Season Transaction Report)
McCutchen is hoping to be the answer for Chicago. |
Who's all in? Who is out?
The league was quiet for the first couple months after the season started, but then the Chicago Nine broke the silence by picking up veteran Justin Morneau in exchange for speedy, plus-outfielder Anthony Gose; The two players have a stark contrast in terms of power, but both give their teams something that they seek.
The Portland Microbrewers (back-to-back National League Champions) once again have the best record in the entire league (in seek of the 1st BoS World Championship) made a huge splash in acquiring shortstop Troy Tulowitzki; Portland also acquired reconstruction relief project Neftali Feliz in the deal, while the Corktown Tamales get themselves a catcher (which they desperately needed) with a little pop and reliable, consistent reliever Mark Melancon.
The Traverse City Panthers were close into landing two big-name starting pitchers from two other franchises, but had to settle on Adam Wainwright from the Kingsley Brownbeards. Things will get interesting as the Panthers will not have Wainwright, Alex Cobb, Drew Smyly, and Henderson Alvarez for the 2016 seasons (due to MLB injuries) -- but will have Matt Harvey returning, to go along with Corey Kluber and a down-year from Julio Teheran (who was finding his way in 2nd-half for MLB). The Wainwright trade comes with another price, the Panthers traded Tampa Bay's Nathan Karns (7-5, 3.67 ERA & 145 K's in 147 IP) who had a good season for the Rays, with Yankees' pitcher Adam Warren (7-7, 3.29 ERA & 104 K's in 131.1 IP), plus T.C.'s 2nd Round Draft pick for upcoming draft. The Panthers acquired scrap in pitchers Roberto Hernandez and Rex Brothers, who will both not play a role in the team this season, and will find themselves most likely available after the season.
The Panthers are rumored to have been shopping Brandon Finnegan, Teheran, Alex Cobb and Dalton Pompey in an attempt to bring a bigger name than Wainwright.
Wanted Man: San Diego, 3rd team to land Puig. |
Two big trades went down on November 1st, the Chicago Nine, no strangers to making a deal (I believe they have made the most deals in the league's brief history), landed Andrew McCutchen. In exchange for McCutchen, the Nine send Cuban star outfielder Yasiel Puig, young ace Danny Salazar of the Indians, and Chicago's third-round draft pick. Chicago acquired Puig from Traverse City prior to the 2015 BoS Draft in a blockbuster trade that watched the Nine send Miguel Cabrera, Drew Smyly, Josh Harrison, Leonys Martin & a Chicago 3rd Round Draft Pick (that ended up being Dalton Pompey) to Traverse City; Puig was sent to Chicago with pitchers Yu Darvish and Cody Allen, plus first baseman Brandon Belt & T.C.'s 1st Round Pick (Rusney Castillo).
Miguel Cabrera happened to be acquired hours before the Chicago-Traverse City Puig-Cabrera deal, when Chicago acquired Cabrera and Wade Miley from the Buffalo Yankees in exchange for young phenom Chris Archer and second baseman Ian Kinsler. Chicago having a knack for landing big players and trading big players, also landed Adam Jones and Elvis Andrus from the World Champion Fairgrove Tigers, in exchange for Carlos Gomez and Shelby Miller.
Johnny Cueto & Holland shooting for division title & more. |
We are at the closing hours, as the BoS has until November 6th (8:00 am) to get in any more deals before the Trade Deadline.

2014 BoS Award Winners
American League
The A.L. Most Valuable Player Award goes to Paul Goldschmidt; Goldschmidt batted .271, 40 HR & 114 RBI with .897 OPS; Along with Madison Bumgarner, helped the Fairgrove Tigers become 2014 BoS World Champions.
Bumgarner was the unanimous choice for the A.L. Cy Young Award, going 20-6, 2.16 ERA with 208 K's in 221 Innings. The Tigers' ace was also a killer in the League Championship Series, going 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA -- including 18 K's (while only allowing 8 hits) in 16 innings of work.
Hyun-Jin Ryu wins the A.L. Rookie of the Year Award; He put together a 16-7 record, that included 7 complete games & a save -- posting a 2.58 ERA with 169 K's in 223.2 innings. Ryu also earned one Cy Young vote.
Koji Uehara earns the A.L. Fireman of the Year Award (presented to the best A.L. Relief Pitchers). Uehara was nearly untouchable with 0.80 ERA & 5-0 record in relief -- he recorded an American League leading 31 Saves, with 72 K's in 56 innings; He also earned 3 votes on the A.L. Cy Young ballot.
Robert Mosher led his Fairgrove Tigers to their first BoS World Championship, by defeating the Portland Microbrewers in the BoS World Series, 4-2. Fairgrove posted a 107-55 record, while winning their division by an impressive 35 games. Mosher also had two stars in Goldschmidt & Bumgarner walking away with awards as well, while he had other stars that played a major part in their championship run in Adam Jones, C.J. Wilson, Mat Latos, Jed Lowrie, Joe Nathan (Fireman Runner-Up) & rookie Jarred Cosart. Jones set the second-half tone for the Tigers by winning the 2014 BoS All-Star Game MVP Award.
National League
The Portland Microbrewers' Mike Trout edged San Diego's Chris Davis for the National League's Most Valuable Player Award. Trout put together an excellent, all-around season, batting .309 with 29 HR & 89 RBI; Trout also stole 19 bases while sporting a .963 OPS.
Davis, meanwhile set the single-season BoS record for most home runs with 56.
Bartolo Colon wins the N.L. Cy Young Award, defeating Hannibal's Jon Lester by 8 votes. Colon was consistent & strong, completing 8 games, while on his way to a 17-7 season campaign with a low 2.07 ERA. He may not have been blazing fastballs for K's (127), but he kept batters off the bases -- allowing only 139 hits & 42 walks, with a 0.818 WHIP!
Lester overachieved with his APBA Grade 11-Y (19-7, 2.20 ERA & 189 K's) compared to his real-life stats of 15-8 & 3.75 ERA.
The #1 overall pick in the 2014 BoS Annual Draft - Yasiel Puig would win the N.L. Rookie of the Year Award for the Traverse City Panthers. Puig's presence with the emergence of Matt Carpenter, Josh Donaldson, Brandon Belt and their pitching staff transformed the Panthers from league laughing stock to falling a game short of reaching the World Series this past season.
Puig batted .275 with 14 home runs & 45 RBI, plus 7 stolen bases in 295 AB's (86 games). He was the other unanimous 2014 BoS award winner (other than Bumgarner) this season. Fellow Panther, Dan Otero led the Panthers in Saves with 22 Saves (while sporting a 1.28 ERA).
Greg Holland felt comfortable in Holland (yeah.. I know) leading the Holland Hitchhikers with 34 Saves (2nd in N.L.) -- with a microscopic ERA of 0.48! Kenley Jansen was runner-up & led the league with 36 Saves for the San Diego Heroes.
Just as Mosher & Fairgrove was to the American League -- so was Brad Stark and his Portland Microbrewers to the National League; Both teams met up in the World Series & their success is reflected in the major awards this season as well. Stark's "Brew Crew" fell short of the BoS single-season record for wins (while setting a N.L. record) with 108 victories -- but have the bragging rights as the National League's only league champions to date, going back-to-back...
while still seeking that BoS World Championship.

The Conclusion of the 2014 BoS World Series
The 2014 BoS World Series
We left off with the Fairgrove Tigers leading the series, 2-0 after the first two games. The Portland Microbrewers are in their second consecutive World Series; both teams trying to win their first championship.
In Game 3, with Portland now traveling to Fairgrove -- Portland's Anibal Sanchez did his best to try and keep the Brewers in the game; He went 7.1 innings, allowing only 2 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB with 10 strikeouts. The Tigers' pinch-hitter, rookie Khris Davis would hit a pinch-hit HR in the bottom of the 8th off of reliever Tony Watson. Joe Nathan would come in for his 2nd save of the series, winning the game 2-1.
With a commanding 3-0 series lead, the Microbrewers find their backs to the wall. Portland sends Cliff Lee to face the Tigers' Mat Latos in Game 4; Both starting pitchers got rocked -- Portland would pull away with 5 runs in the last three innings to win, 11-6. Juan Uribe was the hero for Portland, going 4-for-5, with 4 RBI & 2 runs, with a double -- Only two Brewers in the lineup didn't collect a hit, as Portland put 12 hits on the board.
Portland selected Bartolo Colon to start Game 5 against Madison Bumgarner, who has been unstoppable during these playoffs -- one of the best playoff performances for a pitcher in this league's young history, possible best ever to this point (Art imitating real life). But tonight, "Mad Bum" just didn't have it, got rocked allowing 7 ER, 6 hits & 4 walks in only 5.2 innings. Bartolo got touched up early, allowing 3 runs in the first 4 innings, and then settled down -- he would go the distance, as the Brew Crew's offense went off for a second consecutive game, with 5 runs in the top of the 6th & 7 runs in the top of the 8th. Portland wins again, 14-3, and have outscored Fairgrove 25-9, the last two games for a combined 27 hits in those two games.
Talking about playoff history in the BoS, Freddie Freeman seems to live for this time of season as well, he had a historic post-season in the 2013 BoS Postseason, with 8 HR's! He ended up smacking two homers in this one (including a Grand Slam), going 3-for-5, with 6 RBI & 3 runs. I can definitely say he is our all-time leader in HR's for the post-season, in two years of existence.
Portland down 3-0, has now won two straight & forced a Game 6, playing in front of their home crowd again, the city of Portland was abuzz. But it wasn't mean't to be, Paul Goldschmidt would hit his 3rd HR of the series for Fairgrove, a two-run HR, that gave the Tigers, a 3-0 lead. Jarred Cosart was excellent, allowing only 2 hits, on no runs through 8 innings (although he allowed 4 walks). Joe Nathan would seal down the hatch, as the Tigers win their first BoS World Title on enemy territory. Hisashi Iwakuma got the loss for the Brewers, as Portland will try and get back here a third consecutive season, next year.
We left off with the Fairgrove Tigers leading the series, 2-0 after the first two games. The Portland Microbrewers are in their second consecutive World Series; both teams trying to win their first championship.

Freeman continues to make Post-Season history in the BoS. |

2015 BoS World Series (Games 1 & 2 )
It's now time for the BoS World Series between the Portland Microbrewers and the Fairgrove Tigers, for Portland this is their second consecutive trip to the "Fall Classic", while for the Tigers their first trip. Portland lost the series to South Shore last season.
GAME 1 (at Portland)
Portland sends Bartolo Colon (17-7, 2.07 ERA, 8 CG's with 127 K's) to the mound to face off against Madison Bumgarner (20-6, 2.16 ERA & 208 K's) . Colon by the way, had a ridiculously low WHIP of 0.818! Both pitchers are Cy Young candidates in their respective leagues.
6th Inning - Jed Lowrie breaks the silence in the top of the 6th for Fairgrove, with a RBI double off of the Brewers' Bartolo Colon, the game's first run. Carlos Gonzalez would even things up for Portland in the bottom of the inning with a solo HR off of Madison Bumgarner.
Top of the 8th - Jed Lowrie strikes again, with another RBI double. Adam Jones scores in Lowrie with RBI single, as Fairgrove takes 3-1 lead.
Madison Bumgarner goes 7 innings, allowing only 4 hits, a run & BB, with 4 K's. The Tigers' bullpen holds down the victory, with Joe Nathan closing out the game with 3 strikeouts, striking out Mike Trout, Carlos Gonzalez, allowing a one-out single to Freddie Freeman, and then striking out Alfonso Soriano.
Portland could only manage 5 hits; Bumgarner gets the win, Colon credited with the loss
FINAL SCORE: Fairgrove 3, Portland 1
GAME 2 (at Portland)
The Fairgrove Tigers will send Jarred Cosart had an impressive limited stretch (8-1, 1.81 ERA in 12 starts / 74.2 innings) this season, as he will face Hisashi Iwakuma (13-10, 3.06 ERA & 171 K's) of the Portland Microbrewers. Portland will try & even things up at home, before moving out east to Fairgrove, Michigan.
Top of the 1st - Paul Goldschmidt sends a two-out solo homer to left, to get Fairgrove off to a 1-0 start to Game 2.
Top of the 3rd - Elvis Andrus and Howie Kendrick hit back-to-back home runs off of Hisashi Iwakuma, as Fairgrove increases their lead to 3-0.
Bottom of the 3rd - Jarred Cosart runs into trouble for the Fairgrove Tigers; After recording an out, Cosart loads up the bases all on walks to Coco Crisp, Jason Kipnis & Mike Trout. Carlos Gonzalez hits a two-run single; that's 3 hits & 3 RBI's for "CarGo" in this series. With runners on the corners & one out, Cosart strikes out Freddie Freeman. Alfonso Soriano hits into a force.
Fairgrove 3, Portland 2
Bottom of the 5th - Carlos Gonzalez collects his 4th RBI of the series, with a one-out sac fly, driving in Jason Kipnis to tie the ballgame, 3-3.
The game remains 3-3 for a few innings, Fairgrove's Jarred Cosart did not have his best stuff -- he went 4.1 innings, allowing 4 hits, 4 walks & 3 runs, with 4 K's; His bullpen calmed things down with good pitching by Robbie Ross and Craig Stammen over the next 2.2 innings. For Portland, Hisashi Iwakuma, settled down after allowing 3 runs in the first 3 innings, he would pitch 3.2 more scoreless innings -- finishing the night with 6 hits, 3 ER's, a walk allowed, with 8 strikeouts.
Top of the 8th - The game gets away from Portland, a RBI double with no outs for Adam Jones, as Jason Heyward follows with a two-run jack to right-center -- The Portland crowd is now silence. Lonnie Chisenhall would tack on another two-run HR; all 5 runs coming off usually-effective Glen Perkins.
Louis Coleman gets Fairgrove out of a bit of trouble in the bottom of the 8th, and clamps down the save for the Tigers, while Portland finds itself in a 2-0 series hole; Stammen gets the win, while Perkins gets the loss with 5 runs & 4 hits allowed in only 2/3 of an inning.
Every player (except for Andre Ethier) records a hit for the Tigers, while Portland's bats do slightly better than previous game, with 7 hits (12 hits in 2 games).
The series continues, as we head out to Fairgrove for at least Games 3 & 4, Portland is hoping they will get to play a Game 5, and bring the series back to Portland.
