Automatic

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(Week 19 - Award Winners)

When everything comes down to Adrian Beltre, one thing's for sure, during the 2013 Boys of Summer APBA Baseball League Season, he has been nothing short of automatic. A routine choice, in a relatively quiet week of offense, many had productive but similar weeks -- Beltre wins the N.L. Player of the Week Award by an edge over a few guys. He went 8-for-24 (.333), hitting 3 round-trippers, with 8 RBI & 6 runs.

Adrian Beltre has been red-hot since the break, and like Miguel Cabrera in the American League, Beltre is in the hunt for the Triple Crown in the National League. Beltre through 19 weeks of the season (112 games) is leading the league with a .351 batting average & 99 RBI, he's third in HR's with 28 for the season. Beltre also leads the league in Slugging (.624), On-Base Percentage (.390), OPS (1.057), Hits (149), Runs (74) & Doubles (30). I think at this point, I don't think there is really any doubt on who the league's Most Valuable Player is going to be -- especially if he keeps this tear up.

This week's N.L. Pitcher of the Week goes to Stephen Strasburg of the Holland Hitchhikers, pitching 9 innings of a extra-innings game, earning the victory, allowing no runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, while striking out 12 Fairgrove Tigers, in the team's 1-0 victory (10 innings) -- Greg Holland closed down the save.

Supernatural

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(Week 18 - Award Winners)

When the league's inaugural draft was just a few minutes away, every owner knew it would be either the Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera or the kid playing for Anaheim in Mike Trout -- it was just a matter of which one would go first. Of course, the rest is history as Mike Trout was selected by the Portland Microbrewers as the top overall pick of the Boys of Summer, kind of fitting that this weeks' Player of the Week Awards for each league was won by the two players.

Trout has been heating up, just prior to the All-Star Game -- then showcased his talents at the mid-summer classic, by collecting four hits. This week, he batted .588 (10-for-17), hitting 3 HR, 7 RBI, scoring 5 runs, while swiping three bases.

This week's A.L. Pitcher of the Week Award goes to Chris Sale for his one-hit shutout victory of the Bronx Bombers. Sale also struck out 7 Bombers in the process -- as he edged his teammate Clayton Kershaw & Hannibal's Gio Gonzalez.

Hitchin' A Ride

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(Week 17 - Award Winners)

The Holland Hitchhikers may have had a rough season, but definitely have a lot to look forward to with the amount of youth & potential on their side. This week they sweep the National League awards with their catcher Wilin Rosario winning the N.L. Player of the Week Award & Lance Lynn winning the N.L. Pitcher of the Week.

Rosario's batting average may have not been typical of a weekly winner (.273, 6-for-22), but with no other players showing that much power in the N.L. this week (with the rest of the crowd, being too close to call) Rosario snags the award with his 4 homeruns, 7 RBI & 5 runs scored.

Lynn edges Kyle Kendrick of Seattle, as Lance's one complete-game performance of two-hit ball against the Sacramento 66'ers was enough. Lynn also struck out 12 batters, while only allowing two walks & a earned run.

Beltin' Beltre

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(Week 16 - Award Winners)

Urbana's Adrian Beltre may have put the best week together, so far. Right now, he's on a different planet with the following stats: 15-for-27 (.556), 6 HR, 15 RBI, 9 runs & 3 doubles for the week -- plug in the fact, that he had 3 games with 4+ hits during this week. Safe to say, he was an easy choice for N.L. Player of the Week.

Since the All-Star Break, Beltre is batting .458 (22-for-48), with 8 HR's & 21 RBI, plus 11 runs. He's in competition in all three of the Triple Crown territories, behind a little ways in the HR category, but with the amount he has put over the fence in recent weeks, he may make it very interesting for the remainder of the season.

If the hitting end for this week's Award winners was not enough, Stephen Strasburg (Holland) had a record-setting week as well, with his 18 strike-outs in a single-game against the Buffalo Yankees. He pitched a four-hit complete-game shutout, and struck Miguel Cabrera out 3 times!

K as in Kershaw

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(Week 11 - Award Winners)

K as in strikeout, K as in Kershaw. Clayton Kershaw recorded a win & loss for the week, for a combined week of only 5 hits & an earned run allowed, walking four, while striking out 16 batters in 17 innings. In his victory against the Carolina Eagles, Kershaw pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 6 batters. K is also for Kings, the team that Kershaw plays for. Clayton is this week's N.L. Pitcher of the Week.

Not too many players stood out on the offensive side of things for the National League, except for the Holland Hitchhikers' Will Middlebrooks. Middlebrooks' average may not be over .300 (.292 for the week, going 7-for-24), but he clobbered 4 home runs in the process (including a double) while knocking in 7 RBI, scoring 5 runs. His teammate David Price is still having an excellent season, posting a 10-2 record with a 2.12 ERA -- but the Locos have slowed down as of late, losing 4 of their last 6 games, and currently are in a six-game skid. The Hannibal Cavemen have moved up the tracks are have been catching steam in the last few weeks.

Urbana still leads the division by 7.5 games, but not by the once comfortable lead at the 36-game mark.

Urbana has gone 11-10 since, but no need to panic, it could be worse, they could be the Traverse City Panthers who have lost 18 of 21, who sparked Hannibal's run. We'll have to see how this race plays out.

For the A.L. Pitcher of the Week, there was not really any pitchers that stood out. This week, the one bright spot for the Traverse City Panthers, Matt Harrison gets the nod for the award. Harrison pitched a four-hit shutout that included 8 strikeouts & a walk against the Buffalo Yankees.

He wasn't the only shutout this week, King Road's James McDonald pitched a two-hit shutout, with 5 K's & 3 BB's against the Boston Bravos.

Panda-monium!

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(Week 9 - Award Winners)

The Hannibal Cavemen have recently thawed out of their slumber, and are now rolling. The Cavemen have won 12 of their last 13 games.

So it should come as no surprise that they won both of Week 9's Awards. The A.L. Player of the Week Award goes to Pablo Sandoval ("Kung Fu Panda"). Sandoval batted .563 (9-for-16), with 2 HR's, 7 RBI & 6 runs, with 4 BB's.

Gio Gonzalez wins the A.L. Pitcher of the Week Award this week. Gonzalez pitched two complete games, two victories, one shutout -- allowing 9 hits, no ER's (2 runs), and 2 walks, while striking out 21 batters. Pretty solid performance by the Cavemen overall this week.

Shut-Down Man

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(Week 7 - Award Winners)

Two pitchers each had really solid weeks during Week 7, unfortunately, we can only pick one pitcher. First, we'll start with the runner-up to the award in Hiroki Kuroda of the Urbana Locomotives. Kuroda was not the only Urbana pitcher to have a great week (no surprise there!), but he had the best week -- earning two wins, one of them a complete game shut-out (improving to 7-2, with a 2.88 ERA), while striking out 11 batters, walking 5. He only allowed 11 hits & one earned run, during the stretch -- it's almost hard to imagine some one having a better week.

But it's true, Bartolo Colon of the Portland Microbrewers had the best week, earning him the N.L. Pitcher of the Week Award. Colon pitched two shut-outs during the week! Improving his record to 5-2, with a 1.67 ERA -- he only allowed 8 hits & 2 walks, for a week WHIP of .556 in his 18 innings.

On the hitting side of things, the offense was relatively quiet in the National League. The award this week went to a guy who's had nothing but a quiet season up to this point, but is hopefully starting to heat up for the Holland Hitchhikers. This week's award for N.L. Player of the Week goes to Bryce Harper. Harper batted .368 (7-for-19), with 2 HR's, 6 RBI, while scoring 3 runs. His current batting average this season is only .198!

N.L. Honorable Mention:

  • SP-David Price (URB) - W, 9 IP, 3 H, ER, 10 K, 1 BB -- improves to 7-1, 2.33 ERA.
  • SP-Clayton Kershaw (KING) - W, 9 IP, one-hit shutout, 8 K & 4 BB.
  • SP-Colby Lewis (URB) - L, 9 IP, 5 H, 0 ER/run, 8 K/2 BB (4-1 with a 1.42 ERA this season).
  • 3B-Todd Frazier (POR) - .294 (5-for-17), 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 runs.
  • OF-Jon Jay (HAN) - .364 (8-for-22), 2 RBI, 2 runs, SB.
  • SP-Bronson Arroyo (SEA) - W/L, 14 IP, 10 H, 1 ER/2 R, 11 K & 2 BB's (0.64 ERA for the week).
  • SP-Hiroki Kuroda (URB) - 2 W, 17 IP, CG (SHO), 11 H, ER with 11 K's & 5 BB's.
  • C-Carlos Ruiz (URB) - .700 (7-for-10), HR, 4 RBI & 2 runs.
  • SP-Cliff Lee (POR) - ND, 9 IP, 3 H, ER, with 10 K's, no walks.

  • SP-David Phelps (KING) - ND, 8.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 8 K's & BB.

Strikeout Sale!

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(WEEK 6 - Award Winners)

Chris Sale is piling up the strikeouts for King Road this season, he has now racked up 54 K's in 55.2 innings, while improving his record to 4-2, with a 3.56 ERA. Sale recorded two of his 4 wins against Holland this week; He allowed only 6 hits & 3 earned runs in 15.1 innings, with 17 K's & 5 BB's. His second performance of the week was the most impressive of the two outings, in which on three days rest, went 8.1 innings, allowing only 1 ER, while striking out ten Hitchhikers! Chris Sale is this week's National League Pitcher of the Week.

Last week's Award winner in that category, Jeremy Hellickson of the Urbana Locomotives, had another impressive week, but not as good luck, as he came up on the losing end twice. Hellickson pitched 16.1 innings, allowing only 7 hits, an earned run (out of 5 runs), 0.56 ERA, with 12 K's & 5 BB's.

Sale is not the only pitcher to rack up K's this week, we go to Urbana where Portland's Cole Hamels pitched a single-game league record of 16 K's! Hamels only allowed 2 ER's & 2 walks in the losing effort, giving up 8 hits. Still the feat should not go unrecognized, a great week for Mr. Hamels! His teammate Anibal Sanchez had a great week as well.

For this week's Player award, I changed my mind at the last second. The award nearly went to Traverse City's Giancarlo Stanton, but at the end of the day, the National League Player of the Week it goes to the Hannibal Cavemen's Jon Jay. It was real close with all the hitters this week, but Jay did a bit of everything. Jon batted .333 (8-for-24), with a HR, 7 RBI, 5 runs & 3 stolen bases, to help his team come off with a series split against Seattle. Stanton's effort was pretty similar, batting .333 (7-for-21), 3 HR, 6 RBI & 4 runs, while the Panthers lost their series 3-2 to Sacramento (the last game got rained out).

Honorable Mention:
  • SP-Jeremy Hellickson (URB) - 16.1 IP, 2 L's, 7 H, ER (5 R), 0.55 ERA for the week, with 12 strikeouts & 5 walks.
  • SP-Anibal Sanchez (POR) - 2 W, 16.1 IP, 10 H, 1 ER & 14 K's.
  • 1B/DH-David Ortiz (POR) - .625 (5-for-8), HR, 3 RBI & 4 runs.
  • OF-Ryan Braun (SAC) - .429 (6-for-14), HR, 3 RBI & 3 runs.
  • 1B/3B-Edwin Encarnacion (SAC) - .389 (7-for-18), 2 HR, 3 RBI & 2 runs.
  • OF-Giancarlo Stanton (T.C.) - .333 (7-for-21), 3 HR, 6 RBI & 4 runs.
  • OF-Denard Span (HAN) - .417 (10-for-24), 4 runs & 4 steals in 4 games.

Kick Start!

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(WEEK 5 - Award Winners)

Jeremy Hellickson got things started right for the Urbana Locomotives, by setting the tone for their series against the Traverse City Panthers. Hellickson pitches a two-hit shutout, it would be the first of three shutouts for Urbana in this five-game road series, as Urbana ends up pulling off a sweep of their division rivals. The Panthers have now been shut out seven times!

Hellickson also collected 5 K's & no walks, while recording his 3rd win (3-2 record), and lowered his season ERA to 2.45. Hellickson earns this week's A.L. Pitcher of the Week against some stiff competition, including his teammates David Price (who came close to winning his third award), Colby Lewis &  Hiroki Kuroda.

On the lineup side of things, Urbana was all over the place as well with Adrian Beltre, Jimmy Rollins & Carlos "Chooch" Ruiz, but at the end of the day, the A.L. Player of the Week went to someone not on the Urbana Locomotives; This week's winner is the Seattle Rainiers' Josh Willingham.

N.L. Honorable Mention:

  • OF-Mike Trout (POR) - The #1 overall pick is heating up! .421 (8-for-19), 2 HR, 5 RBI, 6 runs & a stolen base.

  • SP-Colby Lewis (URB) - 9 IP, SHO, 7 H, 11 K & 0 BB's -- due to all the attention on Price, Lewis has quietly gone 4-0 with a 1.53 ERA!
  • SP-David Price (URB) - 9 IP, SHO, 4 H, 10 K & 4 BB's.
  • SP-Bartolo Colon (POR) - 9.1 IP, 2 H, ER (2 runs), 1 K & 4 BB's in extras.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

The Sacramento 66'ers nearly pull off a complete sweep for the week, they end up sweeping the two awards this week, and took 4 of 5 games from the Seattle Rainiers. This week's N.L. Player of the Week goes to first baseman Edwin Encarnacion. Encarnacion batted .357 (5-for-14), 3 HR, 9 RBI & 5 runs, while his teammate Sean Marshall wins the N.L. Pitcher of the Week. Marshall pitched 7 scoreless innings in relief, picking up two saves in the process, while striking out 6 batters (walking none), allowing only four hits for a 0.571 WHIP for the week.

The 66'ers are in a close division race with the Portland Microbrewers & King Road Kings. Sacramento hosts Portland next.

Doing the Locomotion

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(WEEK 3 - Award Winners)

The Urbana Locomotives are off & running, getting contributions from everywhere. Last week's winner Garrett Jones, early on looked as if he wanted to repeat the feat, but cooled off at the end of the week. Adrian Beltre had a great week, batting .368 in 19 AB's, while delivering 3 HR's, 6 RBI, with 7 runs; Beltre's teammate Aaron Hill put together a really nice week with 7 hits as well (.304), with a Grand Slam that counted for 4 of his 7 RBI, plus 3 runs scored.

All was great as Urbana rolled to a 5-1 series victory over the Sacramento 66'ers, and a league-best (blank) record! It was too difficult to ignore their leader & early Cy Young favorite David Price who is now 4-0, 1.38 ERA & 41 strikeouts (leading in all 3 of the pitching Triple Crown categories), opponents are only batting .143 against him! Which makes Price, the first player in the league to win one of the weekly awards twice -- Price, is once again, our N.L. Pitcher of the Week, just edging King Road's Chris Sale.

Both had stellar week's...
  • David Price (URB): 2 W's (1 SHO), 16.2 IP, 19 K's with 2 ER, 3 BB's & 5 hits allowed. He also posted a 1.08 ERA & 0.480 WHIP for the week.
  • Chris Sale (KING): 2 W's (1 SHO), 16.2 IP, 14 K's with 2 ER, 1 BB & 7 hits allowed. He duplicated with a 1.08 ERA & 0.480 WHIP for the week.
Price's 5 extra K's & the fact he's leading the league in most pitching categories gives him the edge.

While the Portland Microbrewers' pitching held the Traverse City Panthers' offense to no runs for a consecutive 37 innings during the week, including a one-hitter. It was one of their sluggers that gets the
N.L. Player of the Week Award, in Todd Frazier. Frazier batted .467 (7-for-15), 2 HR's, 8 RBI & 4 runs, he is currently leading the league with a .692 slugging pct, while placing 3rd with a 1.027 OPS.

Some attention needs to be pointed out to the King Road Kings' Darwin Barney, currently leading the N.L. with a .404 batting average, each week he has been in the hunt for Player of the Week & has been consistent the first three weeks. He actually cooled off this week, batting .333 (6-for-18), oh darn! Someone needs to cut that guy!

N.L. Honorable Mentions:

  • 3B-Adrian Beltre (URB) - .368 (7-for-19), 3 HR's, 6 RBI & 7 runs.
  • OF- Andrew McCutchen (SAC) - .346 (9-for-26), HR, 2 RBI & 3 runs.
  • 2B-Aaron Hill (URB) - .304 (7-for-23), Grand Slam, 7 RBI & 3 runs.
  • OF-Nick Markakis (URB) - .304 (7-for-23), HR, 2 RBI & 3 runs.
  • SP-Jonathan Niese (POR) - W, 7 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 7 K & BB (Improving record to 2-1, 0.87 ERA!).
  • SP-Miguel Gonzalez (KING) - Recorded 2nd shutout (tied with Price), two-hitter w/7 K's & 3 BB's.
  • SP-Jason Vargas (SEA) - 1-1 for the week, 4 ER's, 4 BB's & 11 hits allowed in 16 IP (2.25 ERA), with 10 K & 4 BB's.
  • OF-Curtis Granderson (KING) - Only had 3 hits, but they all were HR's that contributed to 8 RBI.

Jonesin' in Urbana

NATIONAL LEAGUE
(WEEK 2 - Award Winners)

For Player of the Week, one player made it a easy choice -- Garrett Jones of the Urbana Locomotives, just tore the leather off the ball, setting a single-game BoS Record of 9 RBI's in a single-game, while collecting 5 hits (tied for 2nd most) & knocking out 3 HR's in the same game (one of them, being a Grand Slam). He batted .476 against the Hannibal Cavemen (10-for-21) in the series, a total of 4 HR's, 11 RBI, 7 runs with a 1.095 slugging percentage & 1.595 OPS! Up to this point, there has been no other amazing display of power on this level. Jones is our National League Player of the Week.

His 3 HR's in a game, also ties a league-record (Chris Johnson, the previous week).

Lots of great starting pitching in the National League, that's why we had to go with a reliever that stuck out, for the N.L. Pitcher of the Week, and that honor goes to Glen Perkins of the Portland Microbrewers. Perkins collected 4 saves in their series 5-0 sweep of the Seattle Rainiers. Perkins also had 5 K's, while allowing no walks, runs & 2 hits in 3.2 innings (0.545 WHIP). Two of his teammates Bartolo Colon & Hisashi Iwakuma had excellent starts this week, while Marco Scutaro was the Brew Crew's offensive star.

N.L. Honorable Mention:

  • SS-Marco Scutaro (POR)- .500 (10-for-20), 8 RBI, 2 runs & 3 doubles.
  • 3B-Ryan Zimmerman (SAC) - .294 (5-for-17), 4 HR, 5 RBI & 4 runs.
  • SP-Stephen Strasburg (HOL) - 8 IP for W, 11 K's & 2 ER, 2 walks & 7 hits allowed.
  • SP-Miguel Gonzalez (KING) - SHO, 7 K & 1 BB, while allowing 6 hits, in victory over SAC.

The Price is Right

NATIONAL LEAGUE

David Price showed exactly why the Urbana Locomotives took him at #12 overall for their first pick in the 2013 Inaugural Boys of Summer Draft. The Seattle Rainiers were no match for Price, as Price collected two of the team's victories in their 3-3 series split -- while striking out 22 batters (4 BB's) in 16 innings, with a 1.69 ERA. He collected a four-hit shutout in Game 2, while pitching 7 solid innings in Game 6 of the series. Price was the 4th starting pitcher taken in the draft, behind Clayton Kershaw (KING), Justin Verlander (CAR) & Felix Hernandez (CHI).

Price was the easy choice for this week's National League Pitcher of the Week.

Outfielder Giancarlo Stanton (T.C.) set an early-league record by connecting for a home run, for four consecutive games against the King Road Kings; Although the feat was impressive, not to mention that he leads both leagues with 4 HR's (all solo shots), it was not good enough to earn this week's National League Player of the Week -- it would go to his teammate, third baseman Chris Johnson.

Johnson had some tough competition, a good handful of players from the Hannibal Cavemen were on the hunt (led by Buster Posey), while Portand's Todd Frazier & Sacramento's Erick Aybar had great weeks as well.

Johnson batted .389 (7-for-18), including a league-record 3 HRs (all solo's) in Game 4 of their series with the Kings. Johnson also had 4 RBI, 3 runs for the week, while having a 1.421 OPS & the stat that put him over the edge of 19.4 Runs Created/Game.

N.L. Honorable Mention:

  • 3B-Todd Frazier (POR) - .313 (5-for-16), 3 HR, 5 RBI & 1.228 OPS.
  • C-Buster Posey (HAN) - .353 (6-for-17), 6 RBI.
  • SP-Gio Gonzalez (HAN) - 2-0, 3.29 ERA, 12 K & 2 BB in 13.2 IP.
  • OF-Denard Span (HAN) - .353 (6-for-17), RBI & 4 SB's.
  • SS-Erick Aybar (KING) - .563 (9-for-16), HR & 5 RBI.
  • OF-Giancarlo Stanton (T.C.) - .250, 4 HR & 8 RBI.
